“I had an uncle who was a neurosurgeon. I saw the life he was leading, and how he committed himself to others, and it certainly played a part in my wanting to become a physician. It also helped that I was strongly drawn to the sciences, particularly biochemistry. But what really got me excited about medicine was interventional radiology.”

Holding himself to the highest professional standards, Dr. Gilvydis is a member of excellent standing in numerous medical organizations, including the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIPR), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Society of Neuroradiology, and the American College of Phlebology (ACP). In addition, he has also assumed several leadership roles in pursuit of delivering the best possible vein care to his patients. These positions include founding the Gilvydis Vein Clinic in Geneva and Sycamore, Illinois, as well as the Northern Illinois Vein Clinic located in Rockford.

“When I was introduced to interventional radiology, I suddenly knew the way in which I wanted to be able to make a difference in people’s lives. I wanted to be an interventionalist. I wanted to be able to directly intervene in disease process using advanced technologies, because I saw how it made a dramatic, positive difference in people’s lives. Making that difference was why I had become a doctor in the first place.”

Dr. Gilvydis is different from other vein specialists because he has a personal connection to the field. A sufferer from varicose veins himself, he is in a unique position to understand the very personal and painful impact they can have on a patient. This makes him an empathetic practitioner as well as an incredibly skilled interventional radiologist. He prides himself on treating patients quickly, with minimal downtime, hassle, and discomfort. Dr. Gilvydis knows the importance of providing a comfortable and compassionate experience, discussing both treatment and preventative measures.

“More than a decade ago, when endovenous ablation for venous disease was first introduced, I jumped at the chance to learn about this procedure. In addition to having learned advanced catheter skills as a neuroradiologist and interventional radiologist, I also had varicose veins. So treating veins is not just a perfect fit for me but also something that I understand well and have a personal stake in. I strive to provide the very highest standard of care, for one simple reason: We all deserve a comfortable, pleasant experience and the best possible outcomes.”

Dr. Rimas Gilvydis was one of the first vein specialists to treat vein disease with endovenous therapies, and since then has performed tens of thousands of procedures.
