Spider veins and varicose veins can cause symptoms ranging from physical discomfort to social embarrassment. Fortunately, modern treatments such as endovenous laser ablation therapy (EVLT) can help many patients find relief from the effects of these defective veins. At Northern Illinois Vein Clinic, our caring team has years of experience in treating vein issues with the latest technology. In addition to EVLT, we offer state-of-the-art sclerotherapy treatment.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Spider veins and reticular veins appears when defective valves within the veins begin to (fail. Over time, blood can accumulate and cause significant inflammation, leading to bulging veins that look blue or purple. Both EVLT and sclerotherapy have a common goal: to close off and eliminate these defective veins.
During sclerotherapy treatments, our vein specialists inject a sclerosant solution into damaged veins that causes the blood vessels to collapse, scar and eventually fade. This causes the body to reroute blood flow through healthy veins instead. As problem veins disappear, so do the characteristic “spider” markings and swelling underneath the skin.
What are the Potential Benefits of Sclerotherapy for Patients?
The bright and distinct markings associated with spider veins can make people feel uncomfortable with their appearance or ashamed to wear shorts or open shoes. Vein problems can also cause a sensation of leg pain physical pain, burning or soreness that makes it hard to rest. How can sclerotherapy help?
-
Improved skin appearance:
- Sclerotherapy can reduce or eliminate reticular and spider veins.
-
Reduced pain and swelling:
- Eliminating spider and reticular veins can also get rid of the associated tenderness and pain.
-
Little to no down time:
- Most patients return to their normal daily routines within the same day.
-
Greater comfort:
- It’s easier to sleep at night and enjoy other activities without the itching, burning, and cramps that often accompany varicose veins.
Vein disease can be frustrating for men and women of any age. Sclerotherapy treatment is an excellent solution, especially in the case of spider veins and smaller varicose veins. Using sclerotherapy together with EVLT can improve results. Of course, it’s important to remember that each patient responds differently to treatment.
What Does Sclerotherapy Treatment Feel Like?
Depending on where affected veins are located, you may lie on your back during treatment. A vein specialist uses a fine needle to carefully inject the treatment solution into each vein. For many patients, sclerotherapy is completely painless. No anesthesia is usually required.
Some patients notice mild discomfort or a slight burning sensation as the sealing chemical works. In the case of larger varicose veins, you may experience minor cramps during treatment.
How Long Does Sclerotherapy Take?
Each sclerotherapy session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Your treatment sessions may take more or less time, depending on the number of veins involved and the complexity of the procedure. In many cases, patients can resume everyday activities right away.
How long does it take to see results? In the case of spider veins and smaller varicose veins, many patients notice an improvement right away, however, expect definitive results within three to six weeks. It can take longer for the body to completely close off larger veins, sometimes three or four months.
What Should You Expect From Sclerotherapy?
Dr. Rimas Gilvydis provides sclerotherapy treatment during follow-up visits after an EVLA (or other) procedure. While he makes every effort to treat all bad tributary veins, there is a limit to how much sclerosing agent he can introduce into the body at one time. There are rarely restrictions on activity after treatment, though you’ll be required to wear compression stockings for a limited period of time.
Depending on the size of the veins being treated and the number of affected veins, follow-up sclerotherapy treatment may be necessary. This is why our team stays in close contact with you to monitor your ongoing care. We want you to feel attractive, confident, and happy every day.
Why is Caring for Vein Health With Sclerotherapy Important?
Vein disease is progressive and will get worse over time if left untreated. If you are concerned you may have vein disease, such as varicose or spider veins, act quickly to seek a diagnosis and treatment. Taking action urgently is important because chronic vein problems can increase your risk of developing blood clots or deep vein thrombosis.
Don’t put off this potentially life-saving preventative treatment. Our professionals are happy to answer any of your questions or provide additional information about chronic venous insufficiency and sclerotherapy treatment. We are also available to help you navigate your insurance prior to making an appointment. Long days of teaching exacerbated the burning and restless feelings in Kendra Brauer’s legs. The bruises and visible veins also provoked curious questions from her second-grade students if she wore anything shorter than full-length pants. Brauer first noticed a bruise on her leg when she was in her mid-20s. Slowly, more veins showed up and […]
